The UCSU RPG society was set up in September 2011 to provide an opportunity for people interested in pen and paper RPG’s to get together and enjoy a regular role playing experience. For those who do not know what role playing is an example has been provided.

Everyone reads novels or watches films, television etc. But what would it be like to take the role of the lead characters, to decide what they do and how they go about doing it. That’s where role playing games come in. In pen and paper role playing each person creates a character and plays that character through a story either written by the GM (Game Master) or by someone else. The GM is the referee and narrator. It is their job to provide the interaction of non-player characters (NPC’s) and the world in which the game is set. So how does it work? Each character has stats for each of their skills and roles die to decide the outcome of their actions. So game play goes like this.

GM You enter a dark chamber, through the gloom you can hear the scuttling of what sounds like many legs. The rain from outside has left surface water flowing into the chamber in small rivers that flow into the gloom.

Player 1 ‘I don’t like the look of this let’s get out of here and take our chances in the storm’.

Player 2 ‘Don’t be such a wuss’. Is there anything I can see (asking the GM).

GM Not without a torch or form of light.

Player 3 I’ve got a lantern. I’ll light it. (Lights lantern) ‘Now that’s better’

GM With the light of the lantern you can see that the chamber is in fact a corridor that extends beyond the reach of the light. Can everyone roll perception tests.

Everyone roles the dice.

GM Who passed their tests?

Player 1 Only I did.

GM Ok. As the lantern is shone down the passage you can just make out an outline of a large hairy leg akin to a spiders leg.

Player 1 ‘Did anyone see that?’

Player 2 +3 ‘See what?’
And so on so forth.
